This swapping ensures that the transmit end of one device is connected to the receive end of the other device, and vice versa. Crossover patch cables have different color patterns to distinguish them from straight-through cables. In a crossover cable, the first and second wires are green, while the third and fourth wires are orange.

Patch cables are usually made up of one of two types of connectors – RJ45 or RJ11. RJ45 is a standard 8P8C connector used in ethernet networking that has eight conductive pins, while RJ11 is a 6P4C connector used in telephone systems that has six conductive pins. Some patch cables can also come with different connector types to support different network devices.
