Step 1: Measure and cut the cable

Start by measuring out the length of cable you need. It’s important to use the appropriate length of cable for your job, as shorter cables often result in better network performance. Use the wire cutter to cut the cable to the desired length.

Step 2: Strip the cable

Using a wire stripper or cutter, carefully remove about 1 inch of the outer insulation on the cable. Be careful not to damage the inner wires.

Step 3: Untwist the wires

After removing the outer insulation, untwist the pairs of wires and then arrange them in the proper order according to the wiring standard you’re following. The standard for Ethernet cables is T568B, which uses the following color codes:

- Orange/white

- Orange

- Green/white

- Blue

- Green

- Brown/white

- Brown

Step 4: Trim and arrange wires

Once the wires are in the correct order, cut them to about 1/2 inch in length. Then, use your fingers or a wire cutter to arrange them neatly in a row.

Step 5: Insert the wires into the connector

Carefully place the wires into the RJ45 connector, making sure that the wires are in the correct slots. The connector should have small guides to help you place the wires correctly.

Step 6: Crimp the connector

With the wires in place, use the crimping tool to press the connector firmly onto the wires. Be sure to fully insert the connector into the crimping tool, and apply enough pressure to ensure that the wire contacts are properly seated. Repeat this process for the other end of the cable.

Step 7: Test the cable

Using a cable tester, verify that your cable is in working order. If the tester shows any errors, double-check your wiring or crimping.

With these steps completed, you now have a functional network cable that you made yourself!
